Barbados state TV reports live from Belize, wherever that is!

As Tropical Storm Harvey approaches Belize, the folks in the newsroom at CBC TV8 in Barbados found themselves in a curious position: not only was their star reporter stranded in Harvey’s direct path, but their only Caribbean map ended at Cuba.

Not to be outdone by the sudden realisation that Belize is also a member of the Caribbean Community along with Barbados, CBC offered this: a 20th Century map of the Caribbean Basin, and a big ass arrow pointing in the general direction of Belize, or Costa Rica.

Here’s hoping that Belize, wherever it is, comes out unscathed.

Caribbean should establish expert group on migration

My position on migration within the Caribbean Community is well known, and I think this Ronald Sanders article adequately covers why we should all have a rethink about free movement of people within the region.

You’ll also recall that Kittitian Prime Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas, recently expressed his support for revamping the free movement regime within the Community.

Douglas on freedom of movement within CARICOM: Barbados was right all along

It seems like just yesterday that I wrote on the alleged failure of multiculturalism in the UK and the British government’s new immigration controls, conveniently ignoring my personal views on the fatally flawed notion of freedom of movement within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Barbados has taken the lead, and the bulk of criticism, for its critical stance on the freedom of movement regime, but it now appears that there is some political will within the Community - at least from incoming CARICOM chair, Dr. Denzil Douglas - to revisit the framework.
